CHAS Accreditation Support
Expert guidance to help you achieve CHAS Standard, Advanced or Elite accreditation. We handle the complexity so you can focus on winning work.
What is CHAS?
CHAS (Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme) is one of the UK's leading health and safety pre-qualification schemes. Now part of Veriforce, CHAS was a co-founder of SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) and helps contractors demonstrate compliance to clients across construction, facilities management, education and housing.
With over 75,000 registered contractors and 2,500+ hiring clients including major names like Kier, Skanska and Virgin Media, CHAS accreditation opens doors to work with organisations that require verified health and safety competence.
Why Get CHAS Accredited?
- Win more contracts - Many public and private sector clients require CHAS as a minimum
- SSIP recognition - As an SSIP co-founder, CHAS is recognised by other scheme members
- Reduce tender admin - One assessment replaces multiple pre-qualification questionnaires
- Identify gaps - The assessment process highlights areas to improve in your H&S systems
Choose Your Level
CHAS Membership Levels
CHAS offers three membership levels with increasing compliance requirements. The right level depends on your clients' requirements and business goals.
Standard
Entry-level CHAS membership meeting SSIP health and safety requirements. Ideal if your clients simply need proof of H&S competence.
- SSIP health & safety assessment
- Social value assessment included
- Access to CHAS member benefits
- Visibility to 2,500+ hiring clients
Advanced
Meets SSIP plus the former PAS 91 pre-qualification standard. Required by many public sector and larger private clients.
- All Standard requirements
- Former PAS 91 compliance
- Financial assessment
- Environmental & quality policies
Elite
The most comprehensive level, meeting the Common Assessment Standard across 13 risk management areas. Now expected for public sector work.
- All Advanced requirements
- Common Assessment Standard
- 13 risk management areas
- Public sector compliance (PPN 03/24)
Public sector note: PPN 03/24 states that after June 2024, public sector buyers should require contractors to meet the Common Assessment Standard. This means CHAS Elite (or equivalent) for public sector work.

How BPA Can Help
Based in Stoke-on-Trent, we've been providing health and safety consultancy since 1987. Our practical approach takes the hassle out of CHAS accreditation.
- Gap Analysis
- We review your existing policies, procedures and documentation against CHAS requirements. You'll know exactly what needs creating or updating before you apply.
- Documentation Support
- We help you create or update the policies, risk assessments, and procedures CHAS requires. Tailored to your business and activities, not generic templates.
- Application Management
- We can complete the questionnaire on your behalf, compile evidence, upload documentation, and handle any queries from CHAS assessors.
- Competent Person Requirement
- CHAS requires access to competent H&S advice, which is a legal requirement. As your retained consultants, we fulfil this requirement and can be named on your application.
- SSIP Cross-Recognition
- Already hold SafeContractor, SMAS or another SSIP accreditation? We can help you leverage existing assessments to reduce duplication and potentially lower costs.
- Ongoing Renewal Support
- CHAS membership runs annually. We can support renewals, help you upgrade to higher levels, and ensure your documentation stays current throughout the year.
